Truckee Meadows Community College is proud to partner with the Nevada Department of Corrections, supported by state funding, to offer the Justice Involved Education (JIVE) program. JIVE is designed to empower individuals involved with the justice system, including those currently residing at Northern Nevada Transitional Housing, by providing access to education, skills training, and the tools needed to build a better future.
Program Highlights:
Inclusive Learning Environment
JIVE students are fully integrated into TMCC’s vibrant academic community, attending in-person or online classes alongside the general student body. They can pursue any of TMCC's 160+ degree and certificate programs, including career and technical education pathways, to align with their career goals and personal aspirations..
JIVE students attend TMCC classes, in-person and online, alongside the rest of the student body. Some restrictions will apply if the JIVE student cannot be in contact with minors. All students who enter the JIVE program are expected to apply for FAFSA, meet with an academic advisor, and follow an educational plan. JIVE students are eligible for any educational plan at TMCC, whether they wish to pursue a certificate or a degree. Depending on the student’s immediate needs, TMCC will offer advice on which educational program will help them pursue their career goals, and/or help them find work to achieve financial stability. With over 160 degree and certificate programs, JIVE students have many opportunities for an incredible future in a career they will love.
Dedicated Coordination
TMCC’s JIVE program is led by Jarret Orcutt, a formerly incarcerated individual who now coordinates the program full-time. Jarret brings firsthand experience and a deep understanding of justice-involved students' unique challenges. His role is not just administrative—he actively connects with each student, providing one-on-one guidance, support navigating the college system, career exploration, and resource referrals. Jarret's own journey from incarceration to college graduate serves as a testament to what’s possible and ensures every student knows they have someone in their corner who’s walked the same path.
Impact & Success
Since its inception, the JIVE program has celebrated numerous student successes, with participants earning certificates, degrees, and valuable workforce skills that support long-term stability. One of the program’s most remarkable achievements is maintaining a recidivism rate of just 4% among enrolled students—far below state and national averages. This success speaks to the transformative power of education and individualized support, demonstrating how access to meaningful academic and career pathways can break cycles of incarceration and open doors to brighter futures.
